Design Tips from the Pros at Westboro Paint & Decorating
A nickel is all you need!
Want to match a paint color to an existing wall or piece of furniture? Bring us a sample the size of a nickel minimum, and we’ll match it for the greatest accuracy. If you have too, scrape off a small section off your wall or furniture, you won’t regret it.Color your primer!
When painting new walls or any surface that needs to be primed, you’ll save yourself an extra coat of paint if you color your primer as a base to your final coat. Not sure if your walls are latex or oil-based paint?
Here’s a simple test to check if your wall is painted with latex or oil-based paint. Use a small amount of denatured alcohol on a rag and rub a test area. If the paint comes off, it’s latex, if not or hardly, it’s oil-based.
Latex paint over oil-based paint
The short answer is that you can use a latex paint over an oil-based paint but you must prime and/or prep the oil base paint first to ensure proper adhesion.Oil-based paint over a latex paint
You can paint over a latex paint with an oil-based paint but this requires an oil-base primer/sealer first.Saving paint left-overs for future use
Place a layer of plastic wrap over the top of the can before replacing the lid and hammer that lid in place. How much paint do I need? In general, a gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet of wall in a single coat. Add up the length of all your walls, multiply by their height and then divide by 350 to get the number of gallons you’ll need for one coat. That will be sufficient to paint your doors and windows as well. If you do not paint doors and windows, then subtract 20 sq.ft for each door and 15 sq.ft for each window before dividing by 350.What do I do with my old paint cans?
Latex paint - If there is less than an inch left in the can, let it dry out and then you can throw it away in the regular trash. For larger quantities, we recommend mixing in a paint hardener which will work overnight, after which you can dispose of the can in the trash.
